BMW has announced plans to invest £500m to ensure the next generation MINI and upcoming Coupé and Roadster models will all be produced in the UK.

The investment will go towards upgrading production facilities at the assembly plant in Oxford, the pressings plant in Swindon and engine facility near Birmingham. It will also ensure the safety of 5,000 jobs.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “It is a tremendous vote of confidence in the skills and capabilities of the company’s British workforce and in the future of UK manufacturing.”

Over 2 million MINIs have been produced in the UK since the new car began production in 2001 and BMW has already invested around £1.5bn in the UK since 2000.

Norbet Reithother, Chairman of the board of management at BMW AG believes the new investment ensures “the UK will remain the heart of MINI production.”

The move follows on from Nissan’s announcement that they will build the next generation Qashqai in the UK, safeguarding as many as 6,000 jobs.
