Audi has launched an eco-friendly version of its A1 supermini this week, using a revised version of its 1.6-litre TDI engine, to push CO2 emissions below the magic 100g/km barrier for the first time.
Boasting 104bhp and paired with a taller five-speed manual gearbox, the 1.6-litre diesel has start/stop and an improved fuelling system that mean just 99g/km of C02 from the exhaust and a combined consumption figure of just 74.3mpg, bettering the previous version by around 4mpg.
Performance remains competitive though, with the benchmark 0-62mph sprint dealt with in just 10.5 seconds and on to a 118mph top speed.
Standard equipment is as generous as ever, with alloy wheels, air-con and a CD player all included, and the frugal new version is available in all three trim levels, SE, Sport and the racier S-Line.
The biggest benefits of the eco-tweaks are that the A1 now qualifies for exemption from London’s daily congestion charge and from Road Tax from two years under the current regulations.
Prices remain unchanged, and start from £14,480 for the SE, rising to £17,865 for the S Line.

Now all they've got to do is convince me to spend nearly 20K on a car as big as a Kia Rio
HAHA gavsmit, indeed! Crazy price for a tiny matchbox car, 99g/km C02? who cares about C02?
At what cost to the motorist is this C02 and global warming scam? the earth is roasting is it? so what if it's .01 degree warmer?
The earth's temps will always fluctuate and satellites are the only accurate way of measurement and they have shown since 1998 the temps have been coming down with up and down spikes, but down in general, those are the facts, care to believe them or not the info is out there, but the media won't cover it, because everything now is because of global warming, a flood, even the tornadoes in the U.S. And the Tornadoes are because of dramatic cooling in the upper atmosphere! Global warming is like a cult now and the truth doesn't matter!
Anyway back to the A1, crazy price 20K probably 27K Euros here in Ireland with our rip off taxes, no way in hell people will pay that for a tiny car, being Diesel and only 104hp madness, what next?
I still think it's crazy taxes based on C02 emissions but to hell with the carcinogenic diesel exhaust!
Mad lad u r entitled to yr ignorance. That info is 13 hrs old and the science has moved on. Petrol is a carcinogen. Diesel has issues with particulates but these are being addressed with filters and urea injection. Whilst no where near as efficient as the 1999 a2 1.2 tdi, it s a start. Big cars on congested roads are a waste of space.
Haha! Audi can't build them quick enough - people have been paying a premium for a quality small car for years a la MINI etc. Get with the programme people!
I thought the whole A1 idea was laughable, and I was hugely disappointed that it is so safe and not a proper successor to the A2.
However I have now seen them on the road - and (guilty secret) I think they look great! So much more convincing as an upmarket small car than the nasty 'new' Mini, which I loathe.
