This is the new hybrid-only Lexus GS saloon, which is ready to take the fight to the BMW 5 Series. Our photographers have snapped this disguised prototype undergoing testing ahead of its launch later this year.
If the shape appears familiar, you'll likely be thinking of the LF-Gh concept which was unveiled at this year's
New York Motor Show, and which previewed the forthcoming GS.
Whereas the current saloon can slip along a busy street unnoticed, the new model is aiming for a much bigger visual impact which will move away from the company's established 'L-Finesse' design language. The nose will be dominated by a sizeable grille, while the LED daytime running lights incorporated into slimline headlamps can be seen through the disguise. At the back, wraparound tail-lights will contribute to a more modern appearance.
As is the trend with Lexus' current crop, the next GS will be available only in hybrid form, with a lithium ion battery pack assisting what's likely to be an uprated version of the current car's 3.5-litre V6 powerplant. Rumours have it that the 2.0-litre four-pot from the CT200h hatchback is also being considered for the GS.
The production Lexus GS will make its debut this autumn, with the first cars arriving in dealerships in 2012.
