Shelby Tuatara revealed

US supercar is poised to claim title of world's fastest supercar thanks to 1,331bhp engine

Move over Bugatti! Shelby Supercars has released new pictures and named its brand-new contender in the supercar class - the Tuatara.

The US firm is a former holder of the world's fastest production car title - that was with its 1,183HP SCC Ultimate Aero TT that recorded a top speed of 257 mph. The 258mph Bugatti Veyron Super Sport topped that, but now Shelby is back for revenge

Styled by Saab's current design boss, Jason Castriota, the Tuatara will use a 1,331bhp twin-turbo 7.0-litre V8, sending power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed manual or a seven-speed robotised manual gearbox. Performance figures are yet to be released but the aim is clear - to surpass the Super Sport's 258mph top speed.

the name Tuatara actually refers to a type of reptile, native to New Zealand. It supposedly has the fastest evolving molecular structure in nature, something that the company's owner, Jarod Shelby, feels it shares with his carbon-fibre-bodied supercar.

"Most manufacturers essentially use the same basic model and body shape for up to 10 years, while only making small refinements to it each year. After only three years in production with the Ultimate Aero, SSC's Tuatara is about to monumentally evolve in the areas of sophistication, design, aerodynamics and shear all‐around performance. We felt that the fastest evolving DNA was a perfect definition of SSC's latest project.," he said.

There's no word on price, specification or release date yet for the Tuatara, but expect to see Shelby take a crack at the speed record before the end of the year.

Interesting

I don't think it will live up to the promises, or if it does it will be an unusable beast (1300+ hp rwd?), either way it will not have the impact the Bugatti had, but the styling is refreshing and ambitious... Noble, take notes!

An Alien beast from another continent...

Few will drive, let alone own one...

A stealth package would be nice with radar absorbent black paint, IR/Radar guided homing missiles for those evil GATSO's and Speed Camera's... Maybe hologram technology too?

Probably will need some kind of vectoring thrust nozzles to do a three point turn in under a mile...

Pointless without Tyres

When Tyres cant cope with the speed and heat generated at these high speeds, whats the point?

Sheer madness

A great exercise, but of very little practical use. It probably won't get out of first gear being driven normally.

@mko_20vt: The people that design these cars know what they're doing that's why they're paid vast amounts of money to do it.

I don't think the world is too many years from the first 300mph car. Where's is this madness going to stop????

Research

Wasn't the top speed of the Super Sport recorded as 267mph, not 258mph?

2 things

Yes it's a great looking car but...

1. Is it SSC or SCC - make your mind up.
2. I cant look at those exhausts without wanting to flip my laptop up-side-down and say "Kilroy was 'ere".
PS 1300bhp RWD - don't drive it in the rain.

Perhaps they should research the name...

I think the quote they're looking at is:
“What we found is that the tuatara has the highest molecular evolutionary rate that anyone has measured,” Professor Lambert says.
What isn't obvious is that they've not measured the rate in that many creatures, nor should we forget they also found that tuatara "have remained largely physically unchanged over very long periods of evolution" so perhaps not ideal as a role model. Or, perhaps, the following sums things up nicely:
"The tuatara, Sphendon punctatus, is found only in New Zealand and is the only surviving member of a distinct reptilian order, Sphehodontia, that lived alongside early dinosaurs and separated from other reptiles 200 million years ago in the Upper Triassic period."

Tuh Tuh Tah? Sounds like a German Ambulance! Would be more impressed with 1,000 MPG!

Its not advanced technolgie - I would be more impressed if in the USA - bearing in mind the financial state of the nation and dwindling oil reserves - if they - or indeed the one time mighty GM and its thousands of market researchers etc - came up with a 4 seater automobile for US$ 30,000 that could achieve an average fuel consumption over 500 miles of 1,000 MPG!

Is this too much to ask in this yearv 2011 or am I too serious and demanding?

This car is more like something from Boys Own or Dan Dare etc! Sorry Fellas!

Enzo/ Lotus

Looks like a homologation of an Enzo and a new Lotus (therefore...not really original). Not sure about the name or the projecting wings.

Hmmm....

I honestly don't know what to think of this car. The name's a bit weird, but it actually does look cooler than the Ultimate Aero TT. I bet this costs a million quid as well.
