All new compact exec gets sharper look and ultra-frugal engines

The new 3 Series is beginning to shape up. Our spies have snapped these revealing pictures of the new BMW compact exec which give us the best idea yet of how the model will look. 

The front end clearly reveals BMW’s curvaceous new styling, including raised bonnet edges which run from the A-pillars to the edge of the inside of the headlights. The lamps themselves are sleeker than the units found on the outgoing model. 

At the rear, the roofline now flows more gracefully into the boot and there’s a set of cleaner rear tail-lights. 

Under the bonnet will be fresh turbocharged 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines as part of the firm's EfficientDynamics range. BMW is also chopping its 3.0-litre straight-six powerplant in half to create a super economical 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit. Despite producing around 150bhp this engine is tipped to return over 75mpg and CO2 emissions below 100g/km. 

Expect the new 3 Series to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

No It Won't

The new three cylinder engine might be a great engine but when you say "A super economical 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit. Despite producing around 150bhp this engine is tipped to return over 75mpg" I say "No it won't" These figures are only to compare with other cars. But even in the real world if it returns 60 to 65 miles to the gallon the pretty good.
