Mazda SUV cleans up

The all-new Mazda CX-5 will be the most efficient compact SUV on sale

Mazda CX-5

Mazda has taken the wraps off its Land Rover Freelander rival – which will sit below the full-size CX-7 SUV – and says it will be the first car to use its SKYACTIV eco technologies. This means low CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km.

The styling is inspired by the Minagi concept – which debuted at March’s Geneva Motor Show – with the design team doing a good job of retaining that car’s neat look.

The CX-5 showcases Mazda’s new KODO design language, which incorporates a fresh family face and more purposeful stance, which bosses claim it will be extended to the car’s cabin.

Under the bonnet is a choice of the new SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre petrol engine and a SKYACTIV-D 2.2-litre diesel. The latter comes in two power outputs, with the lesser 173bhp option claiming the lowest CO2 figure – although this refers only to the front-wheel-drive version with a manual gearbox.

In comparison, the most efficient two-wheel-drive VW Tiguan provides 64bhp less power and still puts out 139g/km. Among the other SKYACTIV tweaks are new manual and automatic transmissions, while the body and chassis have been developed to be as light and rigid as possible.

The new model is set to make its official public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, before arriving on British roads early next year.

most efficient?

'The all-new Mazda CX-5 will be the most efficient compact SUV on sale'.......not the Skoda Yeti greenline ll 1.6 diesel then at 119g/km?
Ok it doesn't have the same power but has slightly better CO2 figures, and I bet, far cheaper to buy and run.

Winner for Mazda

Wow they've kept it close to the concept, nice job! SKYACTIV is very impressive, very efficient and powerful and considerably lighter, this will sell like hotcakes!

Where's the passion?

Another soulless design from Mazda.
Was the MX3 just a blip in the lifline of boring Japanese auto design.

Nice job

Something different but very Mazda; a decent alternative to a Kuga/Tiguan and some decent engine design too.

@toycollector: MX-3...?! Seriously?? That was a pretty dull car at a time when the MX-5 was rewriting the books on affordable sports cars and Honda's CRX had wiped the floor with its competition. And for all its issues, the RX-8 can never be accused of being 'soulless'.

Very Cool

This looks very like the concept and is all the better for that. I d, consider swapping my Mazda 6 for this, and the 'sky active' tech sounds impressive.

@toycollector your'e talking s**t, Japanese auto design is anything but boring. Cars like the Nissan Primera, Toyota Corolla were hardly sexy but what about Mazda's RX7, RX8 the current 2, 3 and the 6 or models like the Honda CRX , early nineties Prelude, NSX, Nissan Z cars....I could go on and on. Look at VW's or Audi s or Vauxhalls models.... they completely blend in to the scenery and are completely tedious.......

@cousins11

I couldn't agree more. Let's also add various Nissan Skylines, the GTR, Toyota Celica's and Supra's as well as Suburu's Impreza, Mitsubishi's Evo and the 3000GTO too.

I covet owning a Datsun 240Z myself, a gorgeously proportioned motor car.

and the current Civic and Accord looks exciting.

I like it but has the Skyactiv diesels cured the dreaded DPF problem with the old diesel. Assuming it meets the new Euro 6 emission standard then a DPF might not be required and we can drive our diesels around town without the spectre of increasing the oil sump level! For those without a clue to what I am referring, then just visit a Mazda owners forum.

I wouldn't want to buy one of these

The SKYACTIV designs sound exciting but I'm just wondering how reliable this technology will be, as Mazda seems to have had lots of problems with its obsession with the wankel engines in the RX-8.
I bought a brand new MX5 cabriolet coupe a few years ago but the dealership, car and Mazda UK all let me down badly - it was the worst car ownership experience I've had in over 20 years of driving. So for me, I'll never buy one of their cars again no matter how good they claim to be.
