Alfa Romeo has kicked off the countdown to its press conference at the Frankfurt Motor Show with this teaser image, which was revealed on its Facebook page.

The shot appears to give the biggest hint yet that the firm will display a production version of the stunning 4C sports car. This was first revealed back in March in the form of a thinly disguised concept at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new mid-engined model was a hit in Switzerland, with visitors raving about its dramatic shape and innovative use of a carbon fibre chassis developed with help from race specialist Dallara. The Porsche Cayman rival gets a 1.75-litre four-cylinder turbo, which sends around 250bhp to the rear wheels through a six-speed twin-clutch gearbox.

This means 0-60mph in around 4.5 seconds and a 150mph top speed.

In addition to the ‘standard’ 250bhp car, there are rumours of a roadster version, along with a more powerful flagship which could carry the legendary GTA badge.

The 4C is set to go on sale in the UK in the middle of next year, priced at around £40,000 – and it will cross the Atlantic, too. It’s only one part of a new range plan by Fiat and Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne to resurrect the Alfa brand in the States.
