Official: Reborn Jaguar E-Type

Jaguar has revealed a preview sketch of its new coupe ahead of a Frankfurt debut

Jaguar XE sketch

By Luke Madden

17th August 2011

The Jaguar E-Type revival is finally on the cards. A few weeks ago we brought you spy shots of the new two-seater hidden beneath an XK body. And now, the British firm has revealed the first sketch of how the model will shape up.

Called the C-X16 concept, it will debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. And there’s no doubt the designers looked to Jaguar’s classic sports car for inspiration, as the large ‘pontoon’ wings and swept-back lights are both E-Type trademarks. The marque’s new design language – first seen on the C-X75 concept – also features in the narrow tail-lamps and flat spoiler. A large, trapezoidal grille is expected to replace the current XK’s stretched oval, too.

The newcomer has been under consideration since the XK180 and F-Type concepts debuted in 1998 and 2000 respectively; both fell by the wayside because of financial constraints. Jaguar hasn’t released any details on what will power the C-X16 or the final production model. However, a range of newly developed V6 engines is expected. These will produce between 275bhp in naturally aspirated form and as much as 375bhp in the supercharged R. Reports suggest diesel power could be under consideration, too.

Even though the sketch shows a coupe, the prototypes we’ve spied have all been convertibles – suggesting the soft-top will arrive first. It’s likely to go on sale early in 2013, with the hard-top following later that year.

When the car does reach production, it’s expected to be called the XE, and prices will fall somewhere between a Porsche Boxster and a 911 – meaning a starting point of around £45,000.

The model’s introduction will allow Jaguar to move the XK upmarket when it introduces the next generation in 2014.

Ah, the arrogance of youth

As though it were possible to improve on the E-type.

order

If this car was available today i would without doubt buy one. What might happen by 2013 who knows.
One thing for sure, it ain't an e type. What clown first compared it to one???

Facination with the E-Type replacement

I'm not sure what the facination is with e-type replacements.

The fact is that the XJS replaced the e-type and the XK-8 replaced the XJS.

If its going to be reborn properly can it have bad brakes, guzzle fuel and have reliability issues!

Cars like the e-type should be left alone so we can admire them in their splendor in a day when they were genuinely good cars compared to the competition.

I want to remember the e-type as the car Donald Campbell drove in the BlueBird film just before his last run and not see some "recreation" driven by a city boy who has stolen all my money.

Why E-Type

That sketch has no updated likeness to an E-Type. This has got nothing to do with E-Types. If this car is better than anything else on the road, but half the price of its class rivals then it will make the same impact but it still won't be a reborn E-Type. Using the word E-Type every time Jaguar hint about a 2 seat coupe is just using the word as an attention grabbing headline filler.

jakeb1 , nothing will ever replace the E Type . I owned an XK150S as well as Healy 3000 at the same time and a MG -F, but would not let any of them go to own an E-Type but my heart was E . My buds said sell any of them & buy an E Type but I couldn't & my wife said we needed a bigger house not a bigger garage . YES the JAG & Healy required weekly work but never had brake probs nor did any of my E Type owner friends , as to so called gas guzzling "Warez Yoo coming from frend they kept there E's tuned and got 20+MPG at over legal speed limits.

Perhaps what they may be trying to convey is a vehicle that can be purchased at a price at the so called bottom lined porsche new bmw sportsters & give them a run for their $$$ with a car that looks like a real sports car, not like the blunderbuss creatures that the 2 create for lower classes - EH !

looks more like xk8

Its got that nice classic Jaguar coupe side profile. my 1st concern is that squarish grill, not sure how it will resolve in the overall design as jag coupe's have always had oval grills which looked nice. 2nd concern is the price. If jag want to get into the market quick with this then they need to be a bit more competitive on the price, otherwise i do hope for that price a lot of things come as standard.

Hmmm...

...the sketch differs from the XK8...errr...how?

By BARNEYM1979 on 18 August, 2011, 9:05am

Wait for it... Wait for it!!

It's a pencil sketch! Not even a CGI? This is lame news. I expected something like the Swiss Growler which looks so much like a modern E Type that they should be given the factory. I know the Growler is waaaaaayyy over budget but it IS a modern E Type, where this is a... pencil sketch. It could be anything, even an Aston Martin, from the side. This isn't news any more than some kid doodling during a boring maths lesson. Roll on the Frankfurt Show when we'll see if it really is worthy of the name.

E type reliability

I heard about an engineer who had an E type, mechanically it was built like a tractor and it never went wrong. After a few years he became bored with it and bought a Lotus. On this car the cam-belt had no guard - presumably done to save weight. One day he noticed that the dipstick wasn't pushed down properly so he tried to re-fit it. As he did this the cam-belt grabbed his finger and took it around the pulleys. The belt broke, the valves bent, and he was lucky not to have lost his badly bruised finger. After this experience he had the car taken away for repair at a garage. It was brought back on a lorry and sold as the engineer would now have nothing to do with his greatly despised vehicle. Incidentally driving that marque over a kerb to get into a tight parking space can bend the chassis (£s£s£s) so the brand is not ideal for everyday use. Quite a few makes have similar problems as the quest for lightness seems to have gone too far. Perhaps a classic E type could be converted to turbo-diesel (the OEM engine to be kept for when the car was sold) Such a conversion would halve the fuel bills.

E its not.

The E type has been rated by many as the most beautiful car ever.
This is just another modern Jag, er Ford, er Tata.

Should have gone to Specsavers...

Why all the negativity? It quite clearly states in the article that the car is likely to be called XE. As far as the sketch IS news seeing as the concept will be unveiled at the Frankfurt show next month. Sheesh, you people are hard to please, remind me not to invite you to any parties... :/

Somehow I managed to lose 'is concerned' in my comment above, which should slot in between 'sketch' and 'IS'

By sgtgrash on 18 August, 2011, 4:48pm

YES, BUT NO, BUT YES. BUT NO, BUT YES, BUT NO.....

Cant understand what the [mindless] pre-occupation is with some sort of reincarnation/re-invention of the E-Type. That car has gone, forever, never to return. Is there a secret factory somewhere still trickling them out??? NOPE !! It could easily qualify as the best looking car ever designed.....bar none. But it is finished, and can NEVER be revived......it doesnt need to be.....it was 'perfect'. If you own one, I'm envious, or you could go and shell out 85,000 pounds for an Eagle. Whatever Jaguar come up with now, past all the piss and wind, it will NOT be a new E-Type. It wont even be another unmistakeable new Jaguar.....it will just be another car. I realise there are new owners, and times move on, but the biggest shameless con/lie hoaxed onto the public by Jaguar was the unveiling of the C-XF at a motor show, and the XF.....looking like the Quasi Modo pig ugly sister/brother/newt.....hit the showrooms. How funny to see, in the horse-shit language of a designer, 'design cues' from the C making it onto the XF now. But I wont rant about what now poses as 'design' that is sadly no more than merely different.

By barina47 on 19 August, 2011, 7:55am

Oh for crying out loud, move on will you. This isn't the 1960's anymore, car design has moved on. Whether people think it's for better or worse, it HAS moved on. The new Jags are selling well so people obviously like them. I can't say I like the rear end of the XJ for instance, but I appreciate that it's a classy looking car from most angles. The XF is no dog either, especially now it has been revamped. It now looks more like the C-XF than ever.

It's this sort of attitude that did for Rover in the end which lead to the management flapping about spending money all over the place in an attempt to raise the company profile.

I shall say this again so it is crystal clear: THE CAR IN THE SKETCH IS NOT AN E-TYPE, IT IS GOING TO BE AN 'XE'.

Rant over, now breath...

Porche 911 has kept very much true to it's original shape, has the e-type?

Not sure l like this shape compared to the original 60's classic e-type that Enzo Ferrari said was the most beautiful car he had ever seen. This version look bland and modern and anonymous, it could have been made by luxury car maker it looks very generic the same.

Still that said l reserve judgement until we see it in the flesh at Frankfurt. My friend owns an e-type l showed him the sketch he fretted and said "rubbish". I hope it is a big hit Jaguar, and also would like to see it design kept a bit more true to the original even though l expect it can't because the front end has to be an pedestrian accident friendly design these days.

Heads Jaguar loses, tails Jaguar doesn't win!

What a pasting ythey would have got if the C-X16 concept looked exactly like the E-type. This is a fine looking vehicle well up with any other modern high performance GT.

As for the Porsche 911 keeping "very much true to it's original shape", there is about as much similarity between the original 911 and the current model as there is between the E-type and the sketch of the C-X16 concept shown here.
