MPs call for more toll roads

Ministers call for more motorway toll in a bid to raise funds

M6 toll

29th September 2011

Motorists could soon find that they are priced off the nation’s motorways, as Government ministers and business leaders call for more toll roads.

Business Secretary Vince Cable made clear at the recent Liberal Democrat conference in Birmingham that he was in favour of charging motorists on certain roads. “The important priority is that we get our infrastructure improved,” he said in an interview. “I don’t see people protesting about the M6 Toll. It’s popular.”

Cable was echoing the views of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which pushed for tolls in a report published earlier this month. It was backed by the RAC Foundation. Director Stephen Glaister said: “The experience of other countries is that tolls can generate a lot of money and are acceptable to motorists.”

But critics will be horrified that toll roads are back on the agenda. The M6 Toll is one of the most expensive pay roads in the world, costing £5 for a one-way trip after six price hikes in eight years.

West Midlands MEP Mike Nattrass called for the 27-mile route to be nationalised, as it had failed to cut congestion on the M6. The Campaign for Better Transport branded it a “costly failure”.

I have used the M6 Toll in the past and it was always a decent experience. However, it's become far too expensive, now.

For me, the M6 Toll worked because it was an alternative choice to staying on the M6 and not the only reasonable option. I can't accept introducing tolls on existing roads and motorways but I could accept them on new roads, built with private money, perhaps, on condition that all existing, PUBLIC roads remained free of charge and were properly maintained using the substantial finances already harvested from motorists each year.

Toll

The M6 toll has not been the success it was supposed to be and i dont think it has broken even yet financialy. I have used it on a couple of occasions as i live a mile away ,but as an every day route ,with intown parking charges on top of the normal expenses,i would be working just to keep my car on the road.I have tried the train which most of the time was acceptable ,but the cost there was spiraling. If there were more toll roads would MP,s be issued with a "use it for free" pass,or be able to claim the costs back ?.

Let me get this straight - we pay exorbitant tax on the fuel, yet the roads are in probably the worst state they've ever been, and now they want to tax us again for using the very same roads. Do they think we're stupid?

Do you really think that politicians credit us with being more intellgent than them ? Of course they think we are stupid ,we must be to keep paying over the odds for everything, while they put claims in for anything to cover there costs. If that isnt stupidity, what is ?

The Government mearly see this as a great way to make up the national deficit, and cut down on some of the debt. This is a cynical attempt by the Government to raise more cash from already struggling motorists.

Motorists are a captive market,we are the cash cow,we will accept almost anything to keep our motoring independance. I would love to give up my car and all the stupidity that goes with it,if i could get reliable ,reasonably priced and convenient public transport. How about the whole country has one day when we done use our cars, how much chaos and loss of revenue would that cause.Maybe the politicians might take notice (i jest )

If thats expensive try the Humber Bridge

£5 for 27 miles = approx 18.5p a mile
The Humber Bridge is approx 1 mile long and cost £2.70 each way, rising to £3.00 in October. So in October 27 miles of Humber Bridge would cost £81.

Take your point, its still added expense however you work it.I suppose the advantage is time saved v extra money spent on a "short cut" .

Money Making Scheme

I just see this as another money making scheme for the British motorist. Unless your in a big city the public transport system is just not good enough for everyday, reliable use.
And anyway what do the MPs care - they won't have to pay the toll charges when being wafted around in their chauffeur driven cars. They can put it on expenses where again the British motorist will pick up the bill.

Greedy, Grasping, Cheating, Self-Serving, Hypocritical MPs

What exactly does the British taxpayer have to do before our elected representatives realise that WE DON'T WANT TOLL ROADS. Even Bliar recognised that this was not a vote winner yet these clowns are still considering it.
Perhaps if we all started looting then we would be listened to but once these XXXXX get in we are ignored for another 5 years.

Popular?

You've got to be joking. I have and never will use the M6 Toll. I'm beginning to think that the speed limit increase to 80mph is an attempt to 'soften' the blow of all these money grabbing schemes. It'll get to the point where nobody but big businesses will be able to use the roads which will impact a lot of industries. It's disgusting.

Won't Work

Firstly all this will do is to drive extra traffic & congestion onto the non toll roads, which if they are not motorways will lead to more accidents.

Secondly the MP's & Business People will simply claim the cost on their expenses. So no problem for them.
