BMW has released details of the first hybrid model destined for the UK. The ActiveHybrid5 is a 5 Series powered by a 302bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine and a 53bhp electric motor.

Arriving in February 2012 the BMW ActiveHybrid5 accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and will continue on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are 44.1mpg and 149g/km respectively.

BMW’s Professional Multimedia sat-nav comes as standard and can read the road’s ahead to prepare the engine for what’s coming up. That means if it knows there’s a steep hill coming, it stores energy in the battery to assist the engine.

The ActiveHybrid5 can also run on electric power alone for up to 2.4 miles at speeds below 37mph. On motorways it can also cruise on electric power alone up to 100mph or until the driver pushes the accelerator.

Despite looking much like any other 5 Series there are a few bespoke touches that give away the newcomer’s identity. ActiveHybrid badging appears on the grille, C-pillars and doorsills. Plus, there are matt chrome exhausts at the rear.

The BMW ActiveHybrid5 arrives in February 2012 and costs £46,860.
