After a hectic centenary year, Chevrolet is planning another busy 12 months, with five new models set to launch in 2012.

Chief among them will be a compact crossover based on an extended version of the new Aveo supermini.

According to Chevrolet insiders, the wraps will come off at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2012, and the car will take the fight to Ford’s new Fiesta SUV.

The production version will get similar styling to the GPiX concept, and although it will be front-wheel drive as standard, potent range-topping models will be offered with the option of 4WD.

The SUV will also feature Chevy’s new Ecotec turbo petrol engines, plus a 1.6-litre diesel that complies with strict new Euro VI emissions regulations.

Mark Terry, boss of Chevrolet UK, told us: “We’re looking to add a Cruze estate and Colorado pick-up to the UK range.” Also on the way are a three-door Aveo and new flagship Malibu saloon.
