Volkswagen has opened orders for the all-new Beetle with prices starting from £16,490.

At launch, Volkswagen will offer buyers the choice of a 104bhp 1.2-litre TSI engine mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox – though a manual will be added late in 2012 – or a 157bhp 1.4-litre TSI engine mated to a six-speed manual.

Three trim levels are available, ranging from entry-level Beetle trim, with Design and Sport trims further up the range. A Sport model fitted with the 1.4 TSI engine is the most expensive model at £21,220.

Basic Beetle models get air-con, a CD player, DAB radio and central locking, while moving up to Design trim gets you 17-inch alloys, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity a multifunction steering-wheel and body coloured dashboard trim. Range-topping Sport models include 18-inch wheels, cruise control, parking sensors and sports seats as standard.

Later in 2012 Volkswagen will introduce three more engines to the line-up, including an efficient 1.6-litre TDI Bluemotion Technology model with 104bhp, a 2.0-litre TDI with 138bhp and a range-topping 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI unit.

First deliveries will be made in spring 2012.

Difficult to justify

I can't remember the last time any car had me so much in two minds.
The rear looks great (almost Porsche 911 like) but the front is bland and a little gormless.
The car is supposed to exude quality but the interior feels like cheaper materials than in the Golf have been used. It doesn't drive as well as a Golf either, and isn't anywhere near as practical.
It also concerns me that an awkward looking spoiler is added to the back of performance models - much like the original Audi TT had one, because the aerodynamics made it unstable at speed.....
And then these prices - it shouldn't be a surprise coming from VW, but I think this has now tipped the balance and made up my mind for me.

Mmmmm.

Dont really see the point in this when you could have a well specced Golf or a Scirocco for this kind of money. I think its really for the Americans....

Back to basics

VW needs to remember that the success of the original Beetle/Bug was all about low cost and effectiveness, something these new versions are not, they are pricey little buggers. So why would I want to buy a car that is less than practical or best in the looks deparment? Maybe if this car was a simple transport with reasonable equipment and low cost it may repeat it's original success, but that is unlikely to happen because there are so many similar choices to compete. I guess the market for this car is be more nostalgic which modern equipment and tech.
