Should smoking in cars be banned?

The British Medical Association is urging the government to introduce a complete ban on smoking in cars

Should smoking in cars be banned?

By Julie Sinclair

16th November 2011

Smoking should be banned in cars completely, doctors say. Their calls for a change to current road rules in the UK follows a British Medical Association review, which highlighted the increased health risk for passengers exposed to second-hand smoke in cars – particularly vulnerable children.

It warns that the levels of toxins in a car can be up to 23 times higher than in a smoky bar – increasing the risk of a range of conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome and asthma, as well as impairing lung function.

Smoking is currently only banned in public places in the UK, and in cars used for business purposes. Ministers in Northern Ireland have already launched a public consultation on the all-out ban, however, and Wales is considering following suit.

BAN it the sooner the better.

I don't really care if people smoke or not - it's their life - but surely what's more important is to ban having things in cars that are on fire.

The idea of having someone in charge of a car whilst holding what's basically some dried up burning leaves in their hand seems crazy. The potential for that to cause distraction to the driver, by possibly dropping the cigarette, seems to me to be just as high as the distraction of using a mobile phone.

View of a smoker

As a smoker, I've learnt to open the window whilst smoking, actually this is the first thing I learnt when I started to drive.
I fail to see what harm I am forcing upon others when I smoke in my car, which I pay taxes for owning, bearing in mind that I don't smoke in the car if I'm carrying non-smokers in the car. Its my habit and not theirs.

I know smoking is bad for me but I have little will power - I've given up smoking at least 5 times. Why not just go the whole way and ban smoking full stop, though the loss of tax revenues may prevent that action.

Whilst you're at it ban the use of car stereos (they're a distraction) and children in the car (a distraction again).

Legislate that all new cars must be fitted with bluetooth hands free kits, as the use of a mobile phone is illegal, though the majority of motorists ignore that ruling already.

As for the cigarette being a distraction to the driver, then the driver shouldn't be allowed to out by themselves
