This is how the new Volvo XC90 is shaping up. The Swedish company has released these sketches of how the new seven-seater might look when it goes on sale in 2014.
Rivalling the Land Rover Discovery, the XC90 has been a huge success for Volvo; its relaxing and luxurious driving experience combined with a practical seven-seater layout has proved a hit with buyers. However, launched way back in 2003, it's getting on a bit now and is overdue a replacement.
A new model is still some way away – two years say insiders – but it is likely to be much more distinctive to look at – as you can see by this main image, showing a car inspired by the Volvo Concept You, which was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September.
These sketches also show some more rugged interpretations of how the new XC90 could look. All have been produced by Volvo's Concept Centre, which is based in California.
When the new XC90 does arrive in around 2014, expect it to be much more efficient with a range of low emission diesels, and the very real possibility of a hybrid variant too.

Although a refreshing design from the current XC90, I think there is an opportunity to take the design one step further, just look at the Range Rover Evoque. There is enough loyal XC90 owners out there that would still buy the new one if it looked more adventurous and at the same time attract more trend concious buyers. Just need to keep it practical as with the current one and make it look fantastic at the same time and it will be a winner...just look at the competition out there boxy Discovery 4 and the ugly Q7, or rather no competition, so Volvo has to take this opportunity..I have my cheque book ready if they get it right.
I agree with dracer888, sketches two and three are nearer the mark, sketch one looks like a VW Tiguan/Toureg cross/missmatch and sketch four has too much of a BMW tailgate with Kia flanks. Come on Volvo we know you can do it.
I believe image 2 is the best design. The 1st image is too square and already looks out- dated for a 2014 car. The 3rd Image is too sporty and that sloping back I am sure would sacrifice rear head room space. The 4th image, like the 1st one already looks outdated. If Volvo could build the car to look as close to the second image as possible and with a sensible set of 3rd row seats that full size adults can fit in, I am sure they would have a Land Rover Discovery beater. It's the 3rd row seats ability of the Land Rover to fit full size adults that make it such a favourite amongst families. Unlike so many SUVs that can only fit kids in it's third row. The Volvo will never climb mountains like the Land Rover but most people don't buy SUVs for that purpose, It's the practicality that counts. Do that Volvo and I too will be waiting with my cheque book.
I read a few months ago that all the Volvos are going to 4 Cylinders only. That is stupid. Why don't they go like the old days 4 & 6 cylinders.
I am on my second XC90 and third volvo but I have been waiting for 4 months for Volvo to source parts for my latest XC90 which is the top of the range Executive.. I am wondering whether my car will be fixed before the new one comes out. Top marks for style but zero marks for customer service and confusing specifications You need to do much better Volvo because customer service is not evident.
I would say two of the pics are more in keeping with the design trend. Should be more evolution rather than revolution with this particular SUV

Thats were these cars END; The sat-Nav system is the worst I have ever seen in any Car, the economy is none existent along with performance. Not much left really.
