It was bound to happen sometime I suppose...
Yet again you claim a cheep car is coming, wonder how much this one will cost when goes on sale? cant wait to see eh
The beginning of the end for European car Manufacturing?
It all depends on wether they dump their cars on to our market like so many Chinese products, and if the Government are going to let them.
look at youtube ncap safety videos for chinese cars. some barely get one star. That's what the chinese car makers think of their customers. Hey, now they're wanting to make some money in Europe and the West, the safety performance goes up. Let's not kid ourselves that improvement is for our safety. It's so they can actually sell some cars. I wouldn't be surprised if the previous 'death-trap' versions will still be sold to the unsuspecting chinese. Please buy from a car maker with a reputation for safety.
I think all these jokes about Chinese cars and safety are getting a little boring. This car got a four star rating in the LATEST Euro NCAP rating. The Skoda Octavia only got 4 stars in the previous Euro NCAP, which is less stringent. And as for your argument that they are only improving the cars to get through the safety rules - well that's EXACTLY the same as the Euro manufacturers then! Boring arguments made by boring people. The Chinese make some of the highest quality goods in the world, and we are fools to think anything else.
I suspect they will be as popular as that other great cheap car brand Proton. I doubt VW are very concerned.
Geely own Volvo. My guess is that, in three years time, this car will be upgraded to Volvo standards and will then be sold as the baby Volvo - much as Volvo did some years ago with the DAF.
£10k seems fair for an Octavia - sized car and looking at the picture above it looks quite respectable.
@keitharksey
I don't think you know what you are talking about because as steedie suggests this car already got 4 stars on the EuroNCAP and passed level 5 Euro emissions requirements. It's your kind of protectionist attitude that caused the downfall of the British motor industry. Years of protectionism led to a lack of standards in terms of finanical, quality and knowledge of the competitive environment. The Japanese saw this and in a similiar foray to the US motorcycle industry they moved in and competed. Its sad that it took an Indian conglomerate to make a go of JLR. I'm hoping that Geely will bring Volvo's former glory back into vogue and only regret that GM has scuppered SAABs future.
Bargain basement brands are arriving so Volvo will have Geely models to compete. If they appear to be good value, they should attract drivers whose finances have been squeezed. The design of this model does appear a bit like the Chrysler Sebring, or the Nissan Primera, but they may be a success. A decent dealer network will help and, unlike MG, they're not sticking a badge on something that doesn't seem worthy of it IMO.
If you were tempted to buy a "made outside europe" model then look at an MG6 - at least the chassis was designed in the UK and have suspension tuned for UK roads, not Chinese ones. Some m versions are actually assembled here in Britain too.
Such strong stereotypical comments. Go and look at your mobile phone whether it be an iPhone or whatever, it's still made in China like 98% of all things you buy for granted.
Furthermore, the latest Jaguar XF only scored 4 stars in the same latest NCAP tests. What you didn't know is that Jaguar wasn't satisfied with the 4 stars and went back to try and improve on it so to achieve the 5 stars. Is this anything different to what you said about "so they can actually sell some cars"?
I wonder if the new Geely Peace is coming to the UK. It should sell very well back in my native Glasgow, where anybody worth their jam loves a Geely Peace ;)
Yes ok Chinese cars probably aren't the best of looking vehicles. But hey they certainly know what they are doing.
Jaguar just signed up with Chery Automotive to produce Jaguars in China.
MG is owned by the Chinese now
Geeley own Volvo
£10,000 Chinese Mondeo that gets you from A to B, no it won't ever catch on, Skoda used to be a joke but now they changed.
My Dell computer is made in China sad to say, l would prefer to buy British you can poke your cheap Chinese Geeley Mondeo, Czech Octavia or Belgium made Mondeo up you back passage or somewhere else where the sun don't shine.
Toyota Avensis is British made its the only car l would consider as Toyota support the British economy give our children a future.
Geeley will hurt the mass produced car makers, and sad to say we won't be able to do anything about it.
Dacia cars will be arriving at about the same time, there will be a market for all these cheaper cars if the recession continues as peoples budgets for cars take a squeeze, they will sell for sure!!
Geelys Emgrand will become another car destined for the taxi market.
Nice one r0mac, but remember, "You cannae fling Peaces oot a twenty storey flat".
If this can come in at £10,000 with a reasonable spec, it will sell. The biggest problem will likely be that it would be aimed at the cost conscious, but looks like it won't have a diesel. I would expect a lot of older buyers, who tend to have much smaller annual mileages, until they can put in an economical engine.
Who cares about protectionisnm. Stop all of them I say - They will hurt or pockets by underming the second hand values of more expensive cars.
