Toyota has revealed its new Yaris Hybrid, which is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It's the world's first hybrid supermini, and it uses a drive system that's similar to the one found in the Toyota Auris.
Toyota has redesigned its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain to make it more compact to fit within the Yaris frame. It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a redesigned electric motor and compact battery pack which is 20 per cent lighter than the system in the Auris. This system means the Yaris Hybrid produces 98bhp, and power gets to the front wheels via Toyota's e-CVT automatic gearbox.
The batteries are now small enough to fit under the rear seats, so unlike the Auris, the 286-litre boot in the Yaris Hybrid is the same as that found in conventional petrol and diesel versions.
Toyota has yet to confirm emissions or economy figures, or even how far you can drive the Yaris Hybrid in electric-only mode, but you can expect CO2 figures which are among the best in the supermini class.
We'll have more details on the Yaris Hybrid closer to its launch in March, although Toyota has confirmed that it will go on sale in the UK in the summer.

This new car proves that super-frugal superminis aren't boring. It may turn out expensive, but I reckon it'll sell well.
Now all together, Toyota hate brigade:
"Just another bland styling exercise from Toyota, and it looks just like a Corolla".

Ditto, and just to add another angle, I for instance drive a forklift truck (sometimes) , but at least it's generally fit for purpose/not too compromised and quite fun to drive for what it is. These Hybrids/ all EVs struggle against odds optimising an electric drive for the road, you end up with the minimal operable systems devoid of any real organic feel. Which makes it doubly sad that the exterior design as is in this case is left to be so uninspiring.
Two comments above, daft and pointless, but I agree with 'JPW2010'. This new Yaris looks great and will probably sell well but I would question AE's comment about this car being the first Hybrid supermini - What about the Honda Jazz hybrid?
"...or even how far you can drive the Yaris Hybrid in electric-only mode..."
At a guess, same as Prius or Auris - 0 to 1+ mile - electric-only is only for impressing the passenger the 1st time - using it raises fuel consumption, because the engine has to kick in earlier to charge the battery.
I love my current Yaris. After a once in a lifetime treat of buying a sportscar turned out to be an absolute nightmare (a Mazda MX5 Cabriolet Coupe), my Yaris SR has been a complete breath of fresh air - and an exceptional example of great customer service.
But now it is over 3 years old I was looking forward to the new model and in particular the hybrid. But the driving experience has been panned by journalists, the premium over the standard models doesn't justify the tiny benefit in running costs and even the styling isn't as exciting as the concept (shock horror!). The one achilles heel of my model (cheap looking interior) seems to have got worse too!
I think I'll be keeping my Yaris for a while yet.
