The rise of Nissan's performance division continues with the Nissan Micra Nismo, revealed ahead of its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon. It follows the unveiling of the Juke Nismo and Leaf Nismo at the Tokyo Motor Show in December last year, and confirms that Nissan has big plans for its performance sub-brand.

There's no information yet on what's under the bonnet, but a tuned version of the standard car's 1.2-litre three-cylinder supercharged engine is a likely candidate.

A range of Nismo-developed aero parts have been added to the exterior. including a rear roof spoiler, a rear diffuser and a deeper front apron and side skirts. A modified grille, lightweight alloys and the same red white and black colour scheme as the Juke Nismo has been applied.

Inside, custom-designed sport seats and a sports steering wheel mark it out from the standard car. And to make sure the handling matches the agressive styling, lower and stiffened suspension has been fitted at each corner.

Micra NISMO:

The play-it-safe looks of the standard Micra are really lifted with this NISMO bodykit. I like it. Nissan should offer this in the UK and perhaps they will attract some younger customers....

Bound to be known as the "gismo". Yet another stupid name.
