Jaguar XF 161bhp 2.2 diesel

New lower power diesel offers better value and sees price of XF drop below £30,000

Jaguar has launched a new lower power 161bhp version of its 2.2-litre diesel XF, which joins the 187bhp 2.2-litre diesel.

Despite having less power, it is no more economical – it returns 52.3mpg and emits 149g/km of CO2 – but it is cheaper to buy, with the range starting at £29,950, which is £1,000 less.

Jaguar quotes a 0-62mph time of 9.8 seconds (against 8.5 seconds for the 187bhp version) and a top speed of 130mph (142mph).

It comes with an eight-speed gearbox complete with automatic stop-start, but isn't as efficient as the class leader – the BMW 520d ED, which does 62.8mpg and emits just 119g/km.

Standard equipment includes climate control and a leather and suede interior. The 161bhp XF 2.2 is on sale now.

why make a car slower but no more economical its really not worth a grand less

2mpg difference on an extra urban cycle...not a great saving there. I do love the XF. If it was on pure looks alone, I would buy an XF over a 5 series anyday. However, the 5 series mpg stats are to impressive to ignore!

Software

Just software tuning and reducing the price. Weird. Buy it. Save 1000 pounds and tune or place a power box for even better performance.

Why bother?

Lower purchase cost = less benefit in kind tax. That's why.

The real question is, how can Jag justify charging £1000 *extra* for the same car with different software parameters? Hmmm.

Of course, it's not just Jag doing this, software detuning is rife these days. Not so bad if you gain in fuel economy, but this is just daft if you're not buying a company car, that is.

remap it

Buy it, take it down superchips for a remap, 200bhp happy days. It's just another cheaper diesel in an effort to see more Jags in the work car parks because all the managerial bods have Audis to go with their stinking attitudes. Us cool and sophisticated people drive Jags :-)

Oilburner, car companies have been doing it for years!

Stil a million times better than the BMW. I cant believe anyone could chose the 5 tbh
