VW up! 5-door

Volkswagen has unveiled a more practical, five-door version of its up! city car

VW up! five-door front three-quarters

By Sam Hardy

23rd January 2012

These are the first official pictures of the new five-door VW up! – and the more practical sister car to the three-door city car is set to make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Volkswagen says that it’s due to hit UK dealers in the second half of this year, so you should see it on sale around September. As Auto Express closed for press, there was little official information about the new car, but it’s expected to cost around £400 more than the three-door, which means prices will start at £8,395.

VW claims the new five-door model will account for half of all up! sales, too. It’s expected to sit on exactly the same wheelbase as the three-door, with no major increase in dimensions.

Under the bonnet is the same choice of 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines as the three-door, with 59bhp or 74bhp. There will be a road tax-exempt 99g/km car, too, while VW says it’ll offer the same special editions, including colour-coded black and white launch models.

Five-door versions of the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo, both up! sister cars, will also go on sale in the second half of the year.

So there is a special edition called the Black Up! Do this lot have a death wish? Makes the Renault Wind seem positively imaginative in the nomenclature stakes.

cheap QUARTER VENT WINDOW: this tells you all about the quality of this car!

hmmm we have way too many small, cheap cars in the UK. It's quite sad actually

Zzzzzzzzz

I'm starting to fall asleep just looking at it.

Neat

Looks very neat, smart, desirable and totally practical. Very refreshing when compared to the totally overdone and oh so fussy and incredibly expensive Mini.

The price and quality will make this a sure fire success. If it really is as refined and capable as road tests suggest, Up! could well be all the car most people really need

Like it

I think it looks great - even better than the 3 door.

Although the trim level in the pictures will probably come dangerously close in price to bigger cars that will present better value - so as is usually the case, I'll be interested to see what Skoda do with the Citigo.

True, there's a lot of small cars out there now, but most look too 'cute', don't drive very well and are impractical. What VW has done with the Up! / Citigo / Mii is to move the game on.

....and the GT concept is very interesting.

Who knows what it will be like

Until any of the posters on this thread have travelled in this vehicle, or even seen an example, all comment about it is speculative.

By aeolus on 23 January, 2012, 9:24pm

aeolus why so sceptical. Can't you read and believe the road tests and comparison tests that have been published already?

By Ritsaart on 23 January, 2012, 10:12pm

As I have travelled in vehicles recently which bore little resemblence to their respective reviews (both better and worse) the answer is "no I can't".

In other news

The Hyundai i10 has been "exactly what people need" since 2007. It doesn't cease to amaze me how people pay 3-4 grand more for a less kit, less motor, less economy, less speed, less space, less warranty, less reliability. All this will have going for it is a badge and a slightly more refined cabin.

For bigger cars I totally get looking elsewhere, but cars like this are cheap run-abouts who will, let's be honest, transport one person to and from town or work. You've for to really care about what sits in the drive the accept this premium.

@gavsmit

I think you'll find that Skoda and Seat will have identical four-doors real soon. And they'll look better than the Up for not having the pointless and ugly all-glass rear hatch.

Auto version?

But will there be an automatic version, as there is for the VW Polo, Audi A1, Fiat 500, etc?

By gannet on 24 January, 2012, 11:21am

You've done it again

another boring looking car to clutter our roads and for people wanting to own it for it's basic, uninspiring interior. Only the Scirroco is the saving grace about VW.

Up! GT

There we go again with a name :-) Where do they get these names from? However, why froth about an Up! GT? How many Lupo GTs do we see on the road? This is a bog basic car for bog basic reasons that's it... done and dusted until as usually happens the Up! starts to morph into something bigger and eventually you have what all manufacturers do; enlarge and enlarge till you then get "Hey Presto" our range needs a new small city car and the process starts all over again.

Scirocco is the saving grace

Pardon the expression but whichever way you look at the tail end of a Scirocco it has all the charm of Clarkson's "Hippo in a vice". It's plain ugly!!

By Redalfa on 24 January, 2012, 12:20pm

The Up Range

The model name Up has a lot of potential - as well as the UpGT, if it becomes unreliable, it could be called the "What's Up" - if it breaks down, it could be called the "Given Up" and if they can't fix it, it could also be called The "Up U".

NO NO NO NO NO

VW.
You don't have to make ugly cars.
You are better than that.
Take the Routan. Take the Up.
Take them somewhere where people like ugly.

Weren't you the same company that made the Scirroco?
The Kharmann Ghia?
Up = Ugly. Period. Looks like a Honda Fit.

Ugly duckling

lets face it VW never make nice head turners but if one can live with their boring bland designs I reckon this model will give an excellent return on long term savings. Its a town/school trip car and its obvioulsy not targeting mid siz families. They could of made it alot nicer to look at but that would break VW tradition!

VW Up!

I like it, a refreshing undercluttered alternative to some other swoopy, big grilled and overstyled small cars. It doesn't try and be anything other than a small car, well done VW for keeping it simple and judging by the amount of comments it's generated here, it's already causing quite a stir!
