Mercedes A-Class spied

All-new Mercedes A-Class caught on promotional photo shoot without any camouflage

Mercedes A-Class spied

By Luke Madden

03rd February 2012

The all-new Mercedes A-Class has been caught completely undisguised during a photo shoot in Lanzarote.

A video uploaded to YouTube reveals the new BMW 1 Series-rivalling car for the first time following patent office sketches and teaser shots.

Video: Watch spy footage of the new Mercedes A-Class

The car in these pictures is more aggressive than we’ve seen before, with a lower front splitter and grille borrowed from the Concept A. That could be down to the fact this car is wearing an optional AMG styling package.

Under the skin, the A-Class will feature an all-new front-wheel-drive platform with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link rear axle, while power will come from the latest C-Class engines with a line-up of four-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

There will also be a new 2.0-litre turbocharged and direct-injection petrol engine, which the Concept A previewed in 204bhp hot hatch form, hooked up to a dual-clutch gearbox.

Expect to see the new Mercedes A-Class unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, although it’s likely to be five-door only. The sportier three-door model will follow later in the year.

Great looking!

That looks to be a car worth waiting for. I just hope Mercedes has the wits to offer it with engines suitable to the design. Small petrol turbo charged units sounds good.

From windscreen to bonnot - squach = a class!

Wow, if anyone could've made that concept ugly, leave it to Mercedes! This could've been their entry into hot hatches, and hatches for that matter, but wow this looks like a mistake. A real shame, oh well, everyone can forget about not buying their 135is' now, or Toyota FT-86s', or anything else - this ones a flop, and 204? turbo charged 204BHP? Pathetic, waitago screw up Mercedes.

Wow jumping to conclusions, the A Class will have an AMG performance car producing at between 320-350bhp with a 4matic system before jumping!

This car looks stunning and a big change to the Mercedes Brand

A3 BEATER

This car will beat the A3 no problem and so much better than the MPV it was before. Be interesting to see what engines they use in the car. Owned two A classes and none of which left me down.

Credible A class

Apart from the headlight units dominating the front end, this car has an appealing look. I am a little uncertain where the division for A & B class lies though. I do drive MBs, so I have to declare a bias. I have never owned an A class - perhaps now is the time to downsize.
Question to Threepointedstar - how can NONE of the two have let you down?
Whilst I do have some sympathy with AutoExpressHackReview his opinion was a tad harsh I felt. None-the-less the AE site has been unstable for some time it seems. My principal gripe is that the video reviews take so long to generate.
I enjoy the format and the site overall - so AE try to add a little verve to your site and you will keep us coming back for more.

Drab class

Another overly fussy, ugly grill design from merc.
I wonder if Chris bangle is doing a bit of moonlighting for them.

LOOK AT ME. I OWN A MERCEDES.

Is what that A-class grille says to me. And the side view with the ridiculous slash copied from the B-class looks wrong on such a short car.

This will be a hit

Finally the A class which should have been. This will be a massive success as this is the first true high premium compact family car to take on the Golf. The marking is clear, young audience rather than MPV market which the old A class was aimed at. Considering the success of the 1 Series and A3, there is no doubt this will be pinching sales from BMW and Audi. It's a clear statement in its approach.

Oh Dear

Cripes what an ugly thing! - but if BMW can shift the 1 series despite its looks, I suppose Merc will be able to do the same. There seem to be an amazing number of car buyers with no aesthetic sensibility!
