Volkswagen, Bentley's owner, wants to add a second shift at its Crewe polant to help boost annual Continental GT production to around 3,500, with Arnage production at 700 a year. The current recruitment campaign will take the headcount at Crewe to more than 3,000 by the middle of the year.

Meanwhile, the Jaguar plant at Halewood on Merseyside is now rated as Ford's number one factory worldwide in terms of its production systems. As well as the Jaguar X-Type, Halewood is also scheduled to start assembling Land Rover's Freelander model.

BMW Group has achieved record UK sales in 2003 with over 134,000 BMW and MINI vehicle registrations, an increase of 10.8 per cent compared to 2002. MINI accounted for 40,500 registrations, 14 per cent higher than 2002.
