Organ Donor Appeal

Six million motorists are to be targeted in a special drive to boost awareness of organ donation. Organ donor registration forms will be sent to vehicle owners with vehicle tax reminders in January and March. The campaign - Leave more than memories - is being run by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and UK Transplant, an NHS special health authority.

Nearly five million motorists have already signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR) by ticking the box on their driver licence application form, which is already the main source of registrations.

Penny Hallett, Director of Communications at UK Transplant, said: "The driver licensing application scheme is very successful but it only reaches people who have had to apply for a new licence in the past nine years, perhaps because they've changed their name or address. We believe many more drivers would be willing to help others and register their wishes - we just need to reach them."
