F-150 Picks Up Truck Award

What a way to celebrate! Ford's F-150 scooped the North American Truck of the Year vote - announced at the Detroit Motor Show - and the firm had this outrageous version of the popular pick-up on its stand to mark the occasion.

15th January 2004

The one-off, created by DeBerti Designs of Cali-fornia, had wheels that stood 40 inches tall. Next to it was a sim- ilarly modified black model, featuring lowered suspension and a boom-ing 5,800-watt sound system.

The Car of the Year gong went to Toyota's innovative new Prius petrol/electric vehicle, the first hybrid car to win. Auto Express col-umnist Steven Cole Smith sits on the judging panel, and told us: "The Prius is an excellent vehicle, but I didn't award it maximum points because I wouldn't want to drive it every day. I thought it had imprecise electric power-steering. But many jurors were impressed by its keen price of ,995 - that's only ΂£11,000." Mazda's RX-8 was second, with the Cadillac XLR third. Last year victory went to the MINI, the first time a UK car had won.
