The Car of the Year gong went to Toyota's innovative new Prius petrol/electric vehicle, the first hybrid car to win. Auto Express col-umnist Steven Cole Smith sits on the judging panel, and told us: "The Prius is an excellent vehicle, but I didn't award it maximum points because I wouldn't want to drive it every day. I thought it had imprecise electric power-steering. But many jurors were impressed by its keen price of ,995 - that's only £11,000." Mazda's RX-8 was second, with the Cadillac XLR third. Last year victory went to the MINI, the first time a UK car had won.
