Jeep Stretches Out With New Wrangler

There's nothing more American than a Jeep - and the Detroit show would not be complete without new models from the US's best-known 4x4 maker. With a longer wheelbase and larger cabin, the Wrangler Unlimited is the most practical version yet, while the Rescue concept gives a glimpse of future cars from Jeep.

Pictured on the firm's show stand with Joe Eberhardt, executive vice president, the Unlimited is 381mm longer than the standard Wrangler, which means more load space and rear legroom. There are currently no plans to bring it to the UK, but with improved on-road refinement and an increased towing capacity, the Unlimited would be sure to attract new buyers into showrooms.

Meanwhile, the Rescue concept (bottom image), with Jeep design boss Trevor Creed, revealed styling cues that will appear on the next-generation 4x4s. The Hummer H2 rival boasts under-chassis cameras to provide the driver with the optimum view of the terrain. It also has infra-red gear for use in search-and-rescue situations.
