How Alfa's Raising Its Game

It looks as though the 156 Sport-wagon is going up in the world! Exclusive images in the current issue of Auto Express magazine give the clearest picture yet of the Alfa off-roader that bosses hope will open up the brand to SUV buyers.

05th February 2004

Auto Express has revealed before that four-wheel-drive models will be part of the firm's line-up by the end of this year - and the mud-plugger, based on the 156, is right on schedule.

Don't be fooled by this model's 'mule' bodywork though, as the final production car will closely resemble the Kamal concept first seen at the Geneva Motor Show last year. The car is seen as essential to spearhead Alfa's return to the lucrative US market.

Buyers will have the choice of three engines, with entry-level versions equipped with a 165bhp 2.0-litre JTS unit. The sporting flagship will have a 250bhp 3.2-litre V6, and for those who value economy, a 150bhp 2.4-litre JTD diesel will also be offered.
