Scarborough in East Yorkshire is one of the pilot areas where the scheme is on trial. Anne Boyens, manager of the town's Safer Com-munities Partnership, told us: "The letter we send is friendly and informative, telling the keeper where and when we saw the vehicle and what was on show that would put them at risk. No one asks to be a victim of crime, and what we hope to do is remove the opportunity of one being committed." The project is being promoted on stickers, posters, beer mats and car park tickets throughout the region. But not everyone is backing the idea. Critics are unhappy the scheme is being funded by taxpayers, and say that anyone who leaves items such as laptops, mobile phones or bags on show deserves the consequences of their actions.
