Curvier Punto Takes Shape

Auto Express magazine has scooped Fiat's all-new Punto being tested in public for the very first time. Due to make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next year, the Ford Fiesta rival will be bigger and more luxurious than the recently facelifted current model.

09th February 2004

Designed by Italian styling house Giorgetto Giugiaro, the newcomer boasts a more curved look. Despite the bulges on the rear corners of the disguised model in our pictures, Fiat insiders have indicated that the high tail-lamps, which were first seen in 1994, won't be dropped.

The Punto shares its platform with the next- generation Vauxhall Corsa, due in 2006. To improve interior space, the Italian car is fitted with independent suspension, while the engine range includes 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8-litre petrol motors. Fiat's 1.9-litre JTD diesel will also feature, while the 175bhp 1.6-litre turbo unit for the forthcoming Corsa GSi will power a new Punto Abarth.
