Landie Puts Pedal To Metal

It claims to produce the best 4x4xfar, and now Land Rover is turning its attention to two-wheelers. The Midlands outfit is set to introduce a range of bikes that mirrors the strengths and characters of each of its well known off-road vehicles.

23rd March 2004

For committed mountain bikers, a rugged Defender-badged cycle would be ideal, while those seeking greater on-road comfort could find the tarmac-friendly Freelander-badged two-wheeler a more sensible choice.

Details of the new line-up are still being finalised, and it's not yet known whether every 4x4 will get a bicycle counterpart. But insiders are confident that costs will be competitive. Prices are tipped to start at around ΂£500.

It's not the first time that Land Rover bikes have been produced, but the decision to have a pedal-powered range was made after the success of the global G4 Challenge. Competitors were not only required to prove their off-road driving skills, they also had to complete gruelling mountain bike rides as part of the Challenge's physical activities.
