A huge £85million was paid out in compensation for damage caused by bad road surfaces last year - a 50 per cent increase over the previous 12 months. This took nearly all the extra money the Government had given local authorities for highway repairs.
The findings come from the ninth annual ALARM survey, conducted by the Asphalt Industry Alliance. It says the figure could be even higher, as it doesn't take into account admin costs.
