Debut For 9-7X

It's a first for Saab! The Swedish firm has officially unveiled its debut entry into the SUV market at this week's New York Motor Show.

08th April 2004

Called the 9-7X, it is based on the Chevrolet Trailblazer and powered by either a 275bhp 4.2-litre straight six, or a 300bhp 5.3-litre V8 Corvette engine. Saab revealed the newcomer just as the Subaru-based 9-2X performance estate is about to go on sale in the US.

Unlike the 9-2X, which only differs externally from its Subaru sibling, the 9-7X has a unique upmarket interior designed exclusively for Saab buyers. As well as a 9-3-style dashboard and soft leather seats, it has its ignition mounted behind the gearlever - like all true Saabs.

Although the new SUV goes on sale in the US in July, sources close to the company say a UK launch isn't likely for a while yet. One insider told us: "Saab dealers in the UK would love to get their hands on an SUV, but unfortunately these new cars have been designed for the US, and so are only available in left-hand drive. Also there's no diesel option, which is a disadvantage in the UK market."

However, plans are afoot to expand Saab's range globally once the new products have established a foothold in the States. That means UK buyers could receive the next generation of 9-7X, while the company has already said the 9-2X's replacement is definitely being earmarked for a European launch.
