New Plan To Bin Bangers... For Free

A controversial new pilot scheme - in which two city councils get rid of old cars for free - will spread nationwide if it's a success. London and Liverpool authorities have launched Operation Scrap-it, which allows residents to get old bangers towed away and crushed for free. The vehicles are even collected direct from owners' homes.

The idea is to prevent dumping, but critics have argued it's admitting defeat in the battle to get drivers to dispose of old bangers themselves. That can cost up to ΂£50, so people abandon them instead.

A Home Office spokesman said: "We'll be looking to spread the best practice from what works in the two cities. People should take responsibility for getting rid of their car - there's no excuse for abandoning it - but we have to take action." Radio adverts and posters have been launched in the two cities to publicise the ΂£13million scheme.
