Ultimate Mustang's Rorty 40

A tribute to 40 years of performance motoring - that's the thinking behind Ford's stunning new Mustang GT-R. Unveiled at this week's New York Motor Show, the car features a 440bhp 5.0-litre engine and has a different nose to the standard model, seen at Detroit in January.

The wheelarches have been flared, air scoops added and the package is finished with 20-inch wheels and racing slick tyres. Many of the mechanicals have been uprated for track use, and while no cabin pictures are available, the car has an F1-style steering wheel incorporating various buttons, switches and gauges. It's officially a concept, but the GT-R has been designed for race enthusiasts and could be used in a variety of current American series.

"The image of the Mustang has grown with every chequered flag, so we think the GT-R is an appropriate tribute to the car's 40th anniversary - and a hint at what is to come," said blue oval design boss J Mays.
