Astra VXR Flexes Muscles

Plans to turn the new Astra into a storming hot hatch are well advanced - and the current issue of Auto Express magazine carries the picture that proves it. We caught the Vauxhall - to be badged VXR - on test, and its engineers are clearly working hard to shed its predecessor's mundane image.

The car is one of a trio of new models revealed by our spy photographers this week. Also laid bare are a more practical Astra load-lugger, as well as an Opel version of the next Zafira which raises questions about the mini-MPV's roof - it's nearly all glass!

But it's the sporty Astra that performance fans will be most keen to see. The silver machine is fitted with ground-hugging side skirts, a deep front airdam and a neat roof spoiler. The VXR also has a racy exhaust system, and is expected to be hot enough to catch a Ford Focus Cosworth thanks to a turbo powerplant producing approximately 220bhp. Launch dates are yet to be confirmed, but expect the range-topper to join the line-up early next year.

The VXR will be a real test of the Astra's chassis, but more buyers will be interested in the estate. To make additional room for luggage, the most spacious model's wheelbase will be 8.2cm longer than the standard five-door's when it arrives in showrooms this autumn. Our picture shows the new load-lugger's more conservative styling and narrow C-pillar, while it is clear that the Astra's trademark wheelarch extensions will remain.

However, for the ultimate in family practicality, there's no better solution than a mini-MPV - and the Zafira looks set to get even better with the introduction of the new model in 2005. While the cabin will be more spacious than ever, it looks like engineers are also trying to make it lighter thanks to two full-length glass strips on the roof.
