Forecourts are shutting nationwide at the rate of 16 a week, with operators - many of whom are independent - driven out by poor profits. Ten years ago the UK had 21,000 filling stations, but now it's less than half that. The rising price of oil is pushing pump costs up to 80 pence per litre.
