The Tigra is to earn its stripes as part of Vauxhall's new VXR performance range. The convertible is tipped to be the fourth model to join the firm's new sporting line-up, following the VX220 and Monaro - both to be unveiled at this month's British Motor Show - and the Astra featured in last week's magazine.

The Tigra will differ visually from standard models, thanks to the addition of Vauxhall's stylish 'tuning fork' alloys, deep side skirts and a large front airdam. Under the bonnet will be a new 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which is also earmarked for a hot version of the Corsa, developing in excess of 160bhp and delivering a 0-60mph time of less than six seconds. Joining the range in 2005, the Tigra VXR will cost around £17,000.
