Sources at Volvo have finally admitted the XC90 4x4 will be fitted with a V8 engine before the end of this year. Initially for the US market, the eight-cylinder powerplant should be offered in UK cars by early 2005. But there's a debate over exactly which unit will be used. Two engines are available to the firm - a Yamaha-derived 3.5-litre or a variant of the 4.4-litre Jaguar-based V8 that has been developed for the new Land Rover Discovery.
