Hum-ringer Makes A Splash

It looks like a Hummer, but this amazing British-made 4x4 is built to go on water as well as off road!

08th June 2004

Cheekily called the Humdinga - on account of its Hummer-like front end - the machine is made by Coventry-based Gibbs Technologies, and follows on from the company's Aquada amphibious vehicle.

As with its smaller brother, the newcomer uses jetski-style propulsion, and turns into a boat at the touch of a button. While on land, the five-seater can travel both on and off-road thanks to its lofty ride height, adjustable air-suspension and permanent four-wheel drive, complete with low-range transfer box.

And having the same 5.7-litre V8 as the Chevrolet Corvette means the Humdinga performs impressively - whatever the terrain. With 350bhp on tap, the two-tonne brute can sprint from 0-60mph in only 9.2 seconds and go on to 100mph. But where this car really excels is in the wet - it's capable of more than 40mph, which makes it the fastest ever amphibious vehicle on water. Unveiling the Humdinga at last week's Motor Show, Gibbs also announced what must be the most amazing price cut ever. Although the Aquada went on sale only recently, its cost has been slashed from ΂£150,000 to ΂£75,000. Company boss Alan Gibbs said: "We don't want only millionaires to buy it."
