Bruisin' Fusion Gets Toughened Up

The Fusion is taking a spin off-road as Ford bosses attempt to boost sales. Set to be unveiled later this year, the SUV-style revamp will follow the lead set by the Rover Streetwise and VW Polo Dune.

10th June 2004

Exact details aren't known, but it's likely to be based on the Ford EcoSport concept unveiled at Brazil's Sao Paulo Motor Show in October 2002. Matt black body cladding
and extended bumpers would feature, while roof rails will boost the 'lifestyle' image. The Fusion already has jacked-up suspension, so the ride height will remain unchanged.

The news is no surprise, given the Fusion's lacklustre UK sales. Industry sources say it would have made more sense for Ford to choose this look from the start, which would have given the firm a headstart in this booming market. Experts believe a rugged facelift could make the car more credible with notoriously style-conscious SUV buyers.
