Increased Road Deaths Blamed On Speed Cameras

The ABD (Association of British Drivers) has criticised the Government and its speed camera statistics.

28th June 2004

Transport Minister Alastair Darling had claimed that the speed cameras erected in the last three years under the 'Cash for Cameras' scheme have saved 100 lives a year. But his own department figures released later revealed that 100 more people were killed on Britain's roads than in 2000 - the year before the netting off scheme started.

An ABD spokesman commented: "The Government is using the wrong tools to improve road safety, and it is making things worse. It's time it stopped commissioning reports designed to demonstrate that its flawed policies are working and started listening to its critics."
