You can't argue with the figures - Ford and Vauxhall hold a special place in the hearts of UK car owners. According to the latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders statistics, the top 10 most popular cars on British roads all wear either a blue oval or Griffin badge.

Heading the list in 2003 is Ford's Escort MkIV. There were nearly 900,000 examples of the hatchback still registered. Fords make up the top five on the list, with the sixth-placed Corsa MkI the highest-ranked Vauxhall model. Meanwhile, the number of UK-registered vehicles last year was 29,007,820, a rise of half a million compared to the previous 12 months.
