New rules for transporting abnormal loads could lead to rush-hour chaos, the AA has warned.

The Highways Agency has drawn up a fresh code of practice for escorting HGVs with huge cargo. But the Motoring Trust points out that it doesn't restrict travel times. AA spokesman Paul Watters said: "If the loads move at peak times, they effectively shut motorways, as the traffic slows to the lorry's pace."
