Here's a mini-MPV which should offer five-star performance. In this week's Auto Express you can see the first official picture of the all-new Mazda 5, which is due to take a bow at the Paris Motor Show in September. The people carrier's versatile seven-seat interior and clever sliding doors mark the Japanese firm's newest model out as a direct rival to the likes of the Vauxhall Zafira and Renault Grand Scenic.

The 5 is based on the MX-Flexa concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year. On sale early in 2005, it will be available with a choice of three engines - 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol units, and a 2.0-litre diesel. Using the same platform as the Ford Focus C-MAX, the newcomer is expected to cost from £14,000.
