Bigger Punto Is On The Way

It might look like a hot version of the Fiat Punto, but there's a lot more to the secret prototype in this week's mag than meets the eye. Under the skin, it's a test mule for the all-new Punto, which will make its debut at next autumn's Frankfurt Motor Show.

09th September 2004

The white bumpers hold the only clue to its potential - they have been cut and modified to accept a longer wheelbase. Apart from that, the car is almost identical to the current model.

But that certainly won't be the case when it goes on sale. The next-generation supermini will be larger than the outgoing version, as Fiat now has the Panda offering five-door versatility to buyers of smaller cars. It will have an all-new platform, which it's set to share with Vauxhall's next Corsa. Engines will include the excellent 1.3-litre Multijet diesel from the existing Punto.
