Secret New Esprit Taking Shape

Lotus isn't only working on the new GT - this week's Auto Express magazine feastures the first-ever pictures of the latest Esprit.

16th September 2004

The next Esprit will be significantly different, and will use the all-new VVA platform. The wheelbase and axle length can be altered to give different chassis sizes, meaning it will form the basis of several future Lotus projects. Company bosses have admitted the new supercar is currently being assessed, but say a decision has yet to be taken on the choice of engine and transmission. It's rumoured the V8 unit from the old Esprit could make a comeback.

A spokesman told us: "We don't build the V8 any more, but it's still an advanced hi-tech unit. It propelled the last Esprit from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds, so it's certainly an avenue of investigation." The car is due to arrive in 2006.
