The Captain spoke and you responded! The Auto Express office has been inundated with your cut-out coupons and other messages of support as part of our National Motorway Month campaign.

Launched in issue 818, it called for more white chevron sites on the motorway surface because the Transport Research Laboratory believes they cut tailgating. We proved they do, too, with our own research on the M1.

The majority of readers supported our call, and a number of your comments have appeared in Opinions in subsequent weeks. A few people believed chevrons would have little effect without better driver education. As promised, we'll be delivering your coupons to the Department for Transport, with a letter urging ministers to create more sites. National Motorway Month was run by us in partnership with the RAC Foundation, BSM and the Institute of Advanced Motorists, and was supported by the Highways Agency. The hugely successful campaign made headlines around the world.
