Fuel Marks For Pump Offer

How's this for the 'Ultimate' payback? Petrol firm BP will compensate any driver who accidentally misfuels their car at its forecourts.

16th September 2004

Given that thousands of people make the potentially expensive error every year, it's an amazing offer. However, it only applies to customers using the company's Ultimate range of fuels.

The move comes after some BP customers inadvertently put unleaded into their diesel vehicles. They said the confusion resulted from the nozzle for BP's Ultimate performance unleaded being blue, a colour used by some rivals for their derv pumps.
Auto Express highlighted the problem of misfuelling in issue 748, and noted there was no uniform nozzle colour for pumps. A BP spokeswoman told us: "When we launched the Ultimate range, we chose to use blue pumps. We felt it was clear, but some drivers have been confused. So as a goodwill gesture, we'll pay the repair costs of any driver who's made a genuine error."

BP has changed the Ultimate unleaded nozzles to green and clearly labelled the pumps to avoid more mistakes. The spokeswoman said early indications showed the changes were working.
