Wild New Caterham Is Red-dy To Go

Adjustable air vents, a cubby and a red dash - what's going on at Caterham? Enthusiasts needn't worry, though; this is the CSR, the latest Seven variant, and will replace the R500 as the Surrey firm's flagship.

13th October 2004

Power comes from a 2.3-litre Ford Duratec engine developed by Cosworth Racing, from which the car takes its name. This 200bhp unit is vital to Caterham because it meets Euro IV emissions regulations, unlike the K Series motor which has been the range's mainstay for years.

The model is based on the wide-bodied SV, with styling revisions to improve aerodynamics, plus new F1-style in-board front suspension. The rear set-up is new, and the exhaust pipe runs down the driver's side of the car, against Caterham tradition.

Annual production of the ΂£27,450 machine should hit 120, with more than half going to overseas buyers. A spokesman said: "We've already taken 20 orders." A powerful 260bhp version is available for ΂£33,950.
