Canal's Secrets Of The Deep

When contractors started clearing a canal of debris, they expected no more than a handful of cars to be brought up. But now the waterway, in Newry, Co Down, is laying claim to be Britain's most congested!

With 59 vehicles recovered, experts reckon the job is only half done and say another 60 are on the bottom, plus a large caravan. Local authority bosses are blaming youths, who see how far a stolen vehicle can be propelled from the bank before it drops into the water.

A spokeswoman for Newry and Mourne Council told us: "We clean up the canal every 10 years, and allocated a budget for the work. However, after 50 cars had been taken out, we had to ask for more money."
