New PT Fit For Action

We were first to reveal the oddball PT Cruiser was getting a facelift... and now this week's magazine has exclusive images of the revamped model.

Check out the Chrysler's new front lights, shaped at the top to fit the wheelarches and with a double curve at the base. The grille, chromed to resemble the Crossfire two-seater's nose, extends behind the bumper, which now blends more smoothly into the front of the car. Meanwhile, the rear end is lower to the ground, giving better crash protection.

The interior will also benefit from an overhaul, although it will retain its retro look, with an upright dash and Fifties-style steering wheel and instruments.

Engine options include the existing 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre CRD diesel, but new to the UK will be a 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol powerplant, producing 180bhp. Criticism of the car's ride and handling means there will be revisions to the suspension set-up.

It's possible the 2005 model could benefit from four-wheel-drive technology borrowed from sister company Jeep, although this may be held over for an all-new PT, which is expected to appear in 2007. The facelifted car will arrive in UK showrooms at the end of next year.

Meanwhile, Chrysler has issued a worldwide recall of MPVs after claims the driver's airbag doesn't deploy in accidents. A clock spring, which supplies power to the safety device, horn and cruise control, is at fault. A number of Voyagers and Grand Voyagers in the UK are affected, and Chrysler is contacting owners.
