M-way Giant Shows The Way

Nearly as long as two double-decker buses, this is no ordinary road sign - in fact, it's the biggest variable message board in the UK.

21st October 2004

The mammoth piece of metal has been installed above the A1(M) in North Yorkshire as part of the ΂£245million scheme to upgrade it to motorway standards. Three more signs will be added in the coming weeks on the same one-mile stretch of northbound carriageway.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "As you approach the Dishforth Interchange there are already electronic signs, but drivers tend to ignore them. If there's a hold-up on one of the routes ahead, the new boards will give a clear message to prevent congestion. Because they're so big, people can't ignore them!"

Each of the new signs can display one of three different messages to redirect traffic. Their clever design features rotating horizontal slats similar to those already employed on modern advertising billboards.
